At some point in our lives, purpose calls.
What is interesting is that it does not call all of us in the same way.
For one person, it arrives as the desire to write a book.
For another, it is the urge to change direction
For someone else, it may be a pull towards leadership, speaking, creating, mentoring, advocacy, or building something that serves others.
Because purpose comes in different forms, many people do not recognise it when it first arrives.
Instead, they think something is wrong.
They wonder why they can no longer settle. Why they feel restless. Why they keep thinking about making a change. Why the life that once felt comfortable no longer feels enough.
If that sounds familiar, you may be experiencing something many people experience when purpose begins to emerge.
So how do you know if your purpose is calling?
1. You feel a pull towards something bigger than yourself.
You cannot fully explain it. You simply know there is something you want to do, create, build, or contribute. The thought keeps returning no matter how many times you push it away.
2. You keep thinking, “There has to be more than this.”
Your life may be going well. You may have a job, a family, and stability. Yet something inside you keeps asking for more. Not more money. Not more status. More meaning.
3. You feel restless in your current season.
Things that once excited you no longer have the same effect.
You find yourself questioning whether you are still on the right path.
4. You want to share something with the world.
A message. An idea. A story. A solution. A lesson. You feel like life has taught you something and you want to pass it on.
5. You find yourself thinking more about contribution.
This is one of the biggest signs. Purpose often marks the shift from self to others. You begin to think less about what you can get and more about what you can give.
You start asking: How can I help? How can I serve? How can I make a difference?
6. You are drawn to people who are living their purpose.
You admire people who are building, creating, leading, and making an impact.
Something about their journey speaks to you because a similar desire exists within you.
7. You can no longer ignore the feeling.
The pull becomes stronger. The curiosity becomes stronger. The desire becomes stronger.
Eventually, it becomes impossible to pretend it is not there.
What to do Next
1. Get clear on your voice.
Before you can understand your purpose, you need to understand what you have to give. Purpose calls because there is something within you that you owe to the world. The question is: what is that thing?
It could be: You were made for more.
It could be: Self-love is enough.
It could be: You are unstoppable.
Your voice often sits on the other side of what you’ve struggled through internally. It is what your life has left you knowing. It is your comeback.
What’s yours?
2. Pay attention to what keeps calling you.
What keeps returning?
What is it telling you to do? To write a book? To quite your marriage? To change career? To start a podcast? What is it asking you to do?
You have the answer in you so write it down.
Purpose often leaves breadcrumbs before it reveals the full path.
3. Stop waiting for complete clarity.
You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. In fact, you probably never will, and that’s part of the adventure. Some things only become clear once you start moving.
Trust what you know now and take the next step, even if it’s a small one. Clarity often comes through action.
4. Find support.
Sometimes we are too close to our own story to see it clearly.
A coach, mentor, or trusted guide can help you connect the dots and see patterns you may have missed.
Final Thoughts
Your life has something to say. Something it has learned through everything you have lived.
That message is seeking expression, and when you allow it to move through your work, your creativity, your choices and the way you serve others, you find your voice.
Purpose is giving that voice somewhere to go, allowing what your life has given you to become something meaningful for someone else.
And often, what you give finds its way back to you as meaning, connection, peace and fulfilment.
Your life is here to say something. Let it speak.
If this resonated with you or helped you in any way, I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
